Workshop | Frame Drum (HER)Stories. Masterclass for Body, Voice and Drum with Rachele Andrioli, Barbara Crescimanno, Hiram Salsano

The FDH masterclass – open to those who have at least one year of study on the instrument – is a path led by teachers from different areas of Southern Italy (Puglia, Sicily, Campania) that will accompany the participants in an exploration of the female vocal and percussive repertoire of Southern Italy, together with the relationship between the movement of the body and the drum from the techniques of the Greek choir on the rhythmic-choreutic movement in space.
Starting from the exploration of the dynamics of the percussion circle, the work will open to movement that crosses space, investigating the mechanisms of physical-rhythmic relation of bodies and sounds in the row and array, to reach the complex forms of the diamond, of the flock and the three-dimensionality of the chorus in space, facing dynamics of openness and relationship to the outside.
Through the instruments of choreutic movement, traditional singing and percussion we will work on homophony/ unison and vocal and percussive polyrhythms; on the voice linked to the gesture and movement; on the drum as musical instrument and expressive instrument in the rhythmic/ sound gesture: COORDINATION between movement of the BODY, rhythmic on the DRUM and VOICE in the convergences and divergences of rhythm and movement; rhythms in beating and in lifting; introduction of pauses, times doubled and halved; pulsation of base and rhythmic cells; rhythms in 2, 3 and successive combinations.
The work – complemented by the individual participants’ skills and abilities – will encourage creation and artistic expression conceived in a group, to learn to measure up with, and master, the mechanisms of collective creation. This working methodology is the basis of communication and community-building mechanisms, and trains practices for welcoming and creating inclusive spaces and contexts of comparison and mutual support.
During the masterclass will be built structures and moving actions that will accompany the songs sung and played in a tangle between voice, movement and rhythmic sound for the final return, Saturday 16 August.
